We are planning to add a NS700g NAS gateway to our CX700 and one DAE to migrate three old Netware servers (3000 user's home directories) to CIFS. The total data is near 1 TB.

I'm told the optimal Raid-5 is something like 4+1 and 9+1. Is it so bad to config 14+1? Or 13+1 and a spare? Will one DAE of 146GB 10k rpm drives perform well enough for this purpose in an MS Office and Exchange (overflow .pst files) environment?

it is true what EMC say about the RAID with 4+1 and 9+1 (actually 8+1), but it is not a requirement. They have got best practices with those configs, but if you make a raid group 14+1 or 13+1+hs is a good decision. In addition, you will use this disk drives for Exchange, and you need lot space for mails.

Cheers,
