We're setting up voicemail to email on an IP500 rel 5.0 (20) w/embedded voicemail. There is an entry that states;

"Server Requires Authentication
If the server requires a user account to receive and send emails, enter the details of an account configured on that server for use by the IP Office."

Sounds like the server does require authentication because the IT consultant sent thie message;

"They say they also need us to setup a user account to receive and send emails.”

"What emails will this address receive? Who is going to check the account"?

Not sure how to answer these 2 questions.

Thanks in advance

Just try it without the authentication.
If it works then it is fine and if not setup authentication then.

honey, i fried the IP Office !!!

That's what I would normally do but the IT guy is a nudge and I guess he was told it will require authentication. He wants to know what emails this acct will recieve and who will check it.

So I guess the question is how does an authentication acct work...the ipo documation only states;

If the server requires a user account to receive and send emails, enter the details of an account configured on that server for use by the IP Office."

The account set in the smtp tab is the account used for sending.

The email address set at the user is just where it is send to.
That is all.

The necessery email account is only used for outgoing mail and the user credentials are the username and a password.
That can't be too difficult?

Ok sorry maybe I'm being thick but here it goes;

On the system smtp tab;

I have the ip address of the email svr. smtp.coname.com
Port 25 ok
I have a from address voicemail@companyneame.com

Server Requires Authentication:
An Optional setting. If required the Account Name and Password need to be entered.

Ok what acct name are we talking about here...is it the "From" acct or a new/another acct setup to relay messages.

What would be a typical enty for Acct Name when the email svr requires authentication.

Thanks again for any help.

voicemail@companyneame.com is a domain account aka Account Name although I question the spelling of it.. ;)

It's people like you who generalize.

If it needs authentication then it will be the username and password set for that email address

BTW You should realize that all of this is regarding the smtp relay device. Also known as the email relay server. Typically in a locked down system or pre win 2k you MUST enter in the ip address of a server that is authorized to send smtp messages. You can also further restrict it by requiring that only an authorised user(account name.. sound familiar) from an authorised ip address can send smtp mail.

With win server 2007+ you must enter in a email address in the vmpro control panel appliance in order to pass mail.

If the IT guy is that spooked then tell him to create domain user "Voicemail" with a password. Enter it in. Also tell him to allow the vmpro ip address in the smtp relay server.

It's people like you who generalize.

Ok, this is embedded voicemail so no server. He created the address voicemail@coname with a password....would I assume this address would be used as the "From" address and under authentication the user name would be "voicemail" with the associated password?

try 172.193.1.205 as SMTP address, port 25 and anyname@gmail.com see if that works. No auth needed.

Or create an gmail mail account and use;

ip: 74.125.77.109
port: 587
email from address: createone@gmail.com
server requires auth: ticked
user name; createone@gmail.com
password; your password
use challenge response auth: unticked
