Embedded voicemail dialing extension directly via auto attendant

Customer has IP500 v2 running 9.1, exts are in the 2000 range , on the auto attendant I have the direct dial by number checked, on the action tab i have Dial by number on option 2. It didn't work, I found that by dialing a extra 2 it usually works( even though by checking the dial by number option I shouldn't have to), of course usually works is not good enough. I found where someone overcame this on a earlier version using multiple auto attendants ( each digit stepped you thru a auto attendant and the last digit did a direct ext transfer ) but this did not work for me,
any ideas?

This will be an issue caused by the trunks, usually happens with SIP for whatever reason
