Emails to Aliases not being received

emails addressed to the username are being received ok, but emails addressed to aliasses are being rejected from some domains.

eg johnbloggs@domain.com works fine but jbloggs@domain.com doesn't.

It is only happening to some senders - not all (tested fine from hotmail)

The sender gets an NDR saying: Unable to deliver the message due to a communications failure
