Apologies if this has been asked before, but with the inability to search only a specific forum, I gave up looking for the answer on a search of "email" several pages into the search results ;-)

So my question:

- Should the word email be hyphenated (e-mail), or does it really not matter?

I also want to use the word "Emarketing" (to refer to electronic marketing, or newsletters to you and me)... so would presumably use the same format (hyphenated or not) for consistency.

Thanks!
Dan

This raises a very interesting point about what is correct spelling (color/colour anyone?). All the E-words, e-mail, e-commerce, e-marketing, e-banking, e-whaterver are too new and to jargonistic to have 'proper spellings' and we're quickly getting a color/colour situation where both are acceptable. Also I'm not sure if there is a point where a spelling becomes 'proper'. When it gets in the OED? Webster's?

Personally, as you may have gathered, I prefer the hyphen but I won't complain if you prefer them without.

I knew I had seen this before. Here it is:
E-mail, e-mail, Email or email?, thread1256-1131882.

FYI: go to google and search for
site:tek-tips.com "Making an Impression Forum" email e-mail
I often have more luck with that than the on-site search functionality.

but with the inability to search only a specific forum
Are you talking about these forums? If so you ARE able to search specific ones. Just be logged into the forum of choice before selecting the search function.

As for the keywords, you could use both with & without the hyphen. In any thread people will use whatever they are used to using ... not necessarily what is correct.
You could also try just "mail" & "marketing"

[Cheers]

CorBlimeyLimey,

The search facility will search either all forums, or all my subscribed forums. Unless you are seriously suggesting I should unsubscribe from all forums except the one I wish to search, AFAIK, you cannot search just one.

I hadn't noticed before, but you're both right - depending on which 'seach' that you're using. BillyRayPreachersSon, use the search button between the Forum & FAQ buttons.

For all public forums (so this, unfortunately, does not work for the Making an Impression Forum), you can search that particular forum by using the "Keyword Search" link above the "Start A New Thread" box. The link is beside [!]Before you start[/!], contained in the string, "Use Keyword Search and check FAQ area for archived solutions".

We’re getting a touch off topic, aren’t we?

Whoa - I didn't know about that, either! Thanks, smah.

My preference, on all initial-based terms, is to include the hyphen. The hyphen clearly identifies the word as being an intial-based term and as such, emphasizes that the initial letter is directly connected to the base word, yet means something more than simply being the first letter.

Also, the hyphen usually affects pronunciation, especially if the word would not be mal-formed without the hyphen.

e-mail, f-stop, I-beam, G-string, A-frame, etc.

Good Luck

That brings up an interesting question I had never thought of before.

If;
e-mail = electronic mail
f-stop = focal stop
I-beam = 'letter shape' beam
A-frame = 'letter shape' frame

Then;
G-string = ? string (a derivative of the Grafenberg spot?)

[Cheers]

Also:

B-cause
C-zon
D-militarized zone
E-or

Re: g-string, from :

1878, geestring, "loincloth worn by American Indian," originally the string that holds it up, etymology unknown. The spelling with G (1891) is perhaps from influence of violin string tuned to a G (in this sense G string is first recorded 1831). First used of women's attire 1936, with reference to strip-teasers.

Thanks for the informed reasoning, folks. I've decided to run with "E-marketing" and "E-mail", unless the words do not start a sentence, in which case, I'll make the "E" lower case.

Thanks again,
Dan
