My school just had me to install an email server. What we have done is split our once email/proxy server running WinNT4 Server into 2 different computers. Our proxy server works great, but our email server will not send any emails outside of our lan.
We are using Win2000 Server for the O/S, and PostOffice.Com for our email server software. We can email anyone inside of our lan, we can receive emails from outside our lan, but no messages are going out, they are just setting there in the que.
One of the error message is that the email server can not connect SMTP to port 25. The other messages on some of the emails are that it cannot find DMX i believe or it just may be DM.
I did find out that I did not load the SMTP services, so I've added that, but still no messages will go out.

Also I forgot to add, after I installed the SMTP services, I still get the same errors.

Are you trying to relay through another SMTP server or are you sending out directly via DNS?

It sounds like maybe your trying to relay to another server which won't let you relay mail through it so the connection just times out!

I thought that our emails would be sent by our email server which has a dedicated public address on it. We have 2 nics installed, the one to the real world has the public IP address and the one inside our lan has our own IP address. This is the same way we set up our proxy server for internet access. Our DNS server is relayed from our ISP and I do know that SMTP is installed and running on our proxy server, but our email server is not pointed to go in that direction, and probably our Main server has SMTP running on it as well. But once again, our email nics IP address are pointed to go out to the public bypassing our other servers.

As you can tell, I'm new at this.
