Email Notification through Lotus Notes

I'm running BE 8.6 on WindowsNT4.
We use Notes as our email system with an SMTP gateway outside the firwall.
To use MAPI I'd have to install Notes client on my server.[I'm trying to avoid that if possible].
I have setup the SMTP notification settings in BE, but it doesn't work.
How can I setup SMTP notification to make use of the SMTP gateway w/o actually installing the Notes client on the server?
Is that possible?
