Email not sending/PC lock up on phone ring

I have recently begun having two email problems. The first is when I am working offline and my phone rings, the PC locks up. My screen is frozen and so is the keyboard and mouse and I have to unplug the electricity from the PC to get it to reboot. What could this be? Obviously it has something to do with the modem.

The second problem is that I cannot send out email through my ISP. I can receive, just can’t reply or send new messages. When I try to send out, I get the following message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: RE: email
Sent: 9/10/2005 9:30 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'alice' on 9/10/2005 9:30 AM
550 not local host webound.com, not a gateway

The above message is happening with ALL outgoing messages, not just the ones to “webound.com”. These problems just started within the past week.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The first problem could be your modem, some installed software (like maybe a faxing program) that's trying to pick up the line, or it could even be something wrong with the line or another device (phone, answering machine, fax) on the line.

I think the second problem will be easier to resolve:
1st question - what antivirus & firewall software do you use?
2nd question - are your mail server settings in your e-mail program correct?

Smah,

Thanks for the reply. I don't have a fax or answering machine. I have two phones on the line. One in the same jack as the PC and one in the living room. I'll see what happens when I disconnect one or both.

I am using ZoneAlarm's free edition firewall.

I hadn't changed any of the server settings when the problems started. Could they have been changed by a virus/spyware, etc. kind of thing?

Thanks again. If any of the above info brings something to mind, please let me know.

Bill

No antivirus software? Check your mail server settings - some antivirus software or firewall software will change these, and then stop working for no apparent reason.
Are your mail server settings correct?
