We are running W2k Server with Exchange 2000 and have a major problem with sending email to other users who have small mailbox limits. We also have email set up to forward to other accounts. When we send email we are not receiving an undeliverable confirmation right away and our exchange server keeps trying to send or forward the email as per the defaults in SMTP Virtual Server (Delivery Options). Even if we do receive an undeliverable; Exchange is set to forward all mail and therefore then forwards the undeliverable creating a never ending cycle until we delete the messages.
Therefore it keeps trying to send the email every 10 minutes for 3 tries and then every 15mins for about 12 hours and then we receive a delay notification.
Every time the mail bounces we use up precious Mb's and get charged for this. What would the best practices be for configuing the SMTP Virtual Server Delivery Options to stop this. Or can we solve this problem another way.
