Yes, you need to setup the software - which should have come with your Magix Messaging 4.0 module. It is on the same CD as the LAN GUI Admin software. You also need Microsoft Exchange server software installed on your network to make it work. I am not sure it will work without Exchange.
I used this component, but it would never detect the Exchange server. Maybe this is because we have Windows 2003 Small Business Server which includes Exchange 2003. The documentation never explicitly lists anything higher than Exchange 2000. If the system doesn't detect the exchange server, then you cannot even try to set up it this way. I had to implement the system using the SMTP option. In this case, you have to make sure you run the little SMTP sending program at startup also, which you will have to manually set up.
This included software works. We had it set so that every voicemail message left on certain extensions would also be sent as an email copy to the user. Unless you are able to use the exchange set up, deleting the email will not delete the voicemail message from Merlin.
The messages are attached as wave files, and even if you don't listen to them at the computer, it is a nice way to see who a message is from by the email sender/subject which show the caller id number.
We ended up deactivating this option for several reasons. One is that we realized if everyone in our organization (about 50 people) started using this, then they would start archiving voicemail message like they do their email. WAV files are not that small, so you can see how this can potentially create enormous mail storage space usage.
The main reason we stopped using this add-on was that the add-on basically sort of stays logged into the Merlin Messaging system to do what it needs to. After about a week or so of it being in operation, phones would randomly get screwed up displays with weird characters and text appearing, and other random events. The only solution was to go to the phone and unplug it from the wall for a while and plug back in. This occurred with all models of phones we use here and on random extensions. Some people experience similar effects when leaving the Messaging Admin program connected.
If you try to get any sort of support on this product beyond very very basic set up information, you will hit a dead end. Apparently very few people use this add on, so it is not very well known or documented. People who are really serious about having this email feature actually end up going with a more expensive enterprise sort of system other than MERLIN MAGIX.
