I have a phone which used to be able to connect to my email provider and download my email (as long as the message was 65k or less).

However, without any changes to the phone's settings, this no longer works. I've checked the settings on the provider's website and they match the settings on the phone.

The POP and SMTP servers and ports are correct, the id and password are correct, but I'm not able to connect to the server and get my email. The connection tries and tries but never successfully connects.

I've tried using the phone's WAP ability to go to the website and access from there, but I always get an HTTP 500 error.

The phone is a Motorola v500, and the provider is Tiscali.
The settings are:
pop.tiscali.co.uk on port 110
smtp.tiscali.co.uk on port 25
using protocol POP3
and GPRS as the ISP settings.

I'm lost, and can't check this account from the office.

Any ideas?

And what did Tiscali have to say about that?

Their response is that it's working on their end...

Oh well ..
I don't know if you are paying the anything, but certain things cannot be 'seen' from where we sit.
So, IF you are paying anything, I would suggest to insist on a more indepth help then that.

I'm on PAYG, I only pay for the call time to the service.

I pay no monthly fee to Tiscali for the service.

They're not a lot of help to be honest...

I know, I have the same problem here with Tiscali, no help, even when paying, so, I kicked them out.

Is this what you are using?

PS:
About the 500 error:
This error can only be resolved by fixes to the Web server software. It is not a client-side problem. It is up to the operators of your Web server site to locate and analyse the logs which should give further information about the error.

Yeah. That's the page I'm getting settings etc off.

Oddly enough the Tiscali by phone service is quite good - It's rubbish at reading you the email but you can check for important stuff and delete spam...

Maybe I need to change ISP - I use telewest for my connection but have a longstanding and well distributed Tiscali address, and I don't really want to have to change it. Maybe I get no choice though?

I know the 500 error is their problem - I found a definition online which basically said so.

Going to push Tiscali harder for resolution assistance and see what happens

I suppose you get the error 500 when going to:

Before you complain to them, does it work when you 'surf' elsewhere?

Nope. That page retrieves all right. When I click on email on that menu, I get the http error then.

Takes me to the same place, where I click on email to receive the 500 error.

Hmm, puzzling...
Can you access that page on a 'regular' PC? I can.

I can see the main page (tiscali.co.uk) on my work pc - but access to the webmail is blocked by the firewall.

And although I could circumvent that by plugging in a phone line and creating a dialup connection, I think the IT Security bods would have a few q's for me...
