Email alerts not working

Hi All

SPS2003 with sql 2005 backend, Exchange 2003, all on win 2003

Got a problem with email alerts not working. I posted on this a couple of weeks ago but i guess people were still on holiday. On the theory that you should fix what is broken - I ran up the config analyzer. The only warning was under web.config

'The location of WP Resources cannot be determined'

I've looked under IIS in the default site and there is an WPresources and _wpresources

I couldn't figure out where in the main site i check the script and executable permissions for WPresources.

And on the wider subject is there any way to make sharepoint send an alert email to see if anything happens. I need to know which part is broken. Any links on detailed architecture of the email integration particularly a flowchart would be really good. I've searched in my 5 sharepoint books darned thin on alerts :(
 
Do you have your email server configured in the Sharepoint Central Ops setup correctly? Also your email server has to allow anonymous sending of emails or else the alerts won't work.

The email server is configured. By anonymous sending do you mean that i have to allow relaying from the SPS2003 box?
