We have SP server 2007, now we have created a list that shows all our hardware, now we want a email alert to be sent to us to warn us when a piece of hardward is coming up on warranty expiration and to be notified 30, 60, 90 and 120 days out. Example Dell Latitude E6500 warranty expires on 12/1/2012, we want an email alert or reminder based on our requirements for replacing this hardware. I need to know how to complete this task or if code and can copy and pasted into our site for this or do we need SharePoint Designer?

Thanks - Martin

SharePoint Designer would probably be your best bet - you can create a workflow on that library to notify you based on the value of a column.

I’ve been down this road. I wanted to make a custom list for contracts and software maintenance renewals. Wanted a variable lead time notification and an expired notification. Sharepoint designer was the first place I tried to get this done but its trigging mechanisms were not what I wanted. I wanted to process the list once a day send notifications on the dates if they equaled today. What I ended up doing was using a webpart I found online and it works real well for this. It is a paid product but if I remember correctly you can use it on 10 lists for free. The following is a link to it:
