You don't need Outlook (or another mail client) installed on your local machine, rather you need to be able to connect to "normal" mail server (that implies TCP/IP networking, of course). Among the protocols possible we use "Internet E-mail" (SMTP/POP3) to connect to either a (small) Unix box or a (bigger) Windows box runnig Exchange.
