While moving into my new house, my eMac took a tumble down the stairs and has since been rendered unuseable. I was hoping someone could suggest the best way to go about retrieving all my data off the hard drive. I have since bought a new G5 iMac. Can I swap drives?

Jimbopalmer's itdea is your best bet.

OW computing - his link - is an excellent source. You'll find a wider selection of Firewire enclosures if you go to their main site:
I'd suggest getting one that supports both FW and USB. That's only because I once wiped out the firewire connect on an outboard drive by installing an OSX update without disconeecting the drive - not reading Apple's warning. I was able to connect to the usb and maintain all the data. A an extra usb interface also allows you to connect to an older, non firewire mac.

Hmm I would be surprised any retailers were still selling firewire enclosures with firmware from 2003 in 2005, although it may be an issue with ebay

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

The bug is not really a loss of data. It's that the computer will no longer recognize the drive - which happened to me. That's the beauty of spending a little more for firewire/usb. Iplugged it into a usb port and all data was there and usable. My auto backup program even continued to work.
