eMac audio input

I am having difficulty with the audio line input on an eMac. I have gone to the OS X System Preferences and clicked on the Audio icon, and changed audio to the line input, and set the input level as high as possible. With any microphone I plug into the mini-jack audio line input port, I cannot get sound input into the system. Is there a solution to this problem? Is this a techical problem with this eMac, or is there something I need to do. or get, to make it work. Thanks, in advance, for any help you can give.

If I recall correctly, the mic input must be powered. It is essentially a line in. pre-amp your microphone before it gets to the mic input.

Check your manual first to confirm this as you would not want to put a powered mic in a un-powered mic input.
