I'm trying to convert a 16 page 8.5x11 booklet to "2-up saddle stitch" using the build booklet plugin. I'm using 17x11 for the spread size. For some reason unknown to me there is a single blank "page 1" so PageMaker says there are 17 pages total. If I remove the blank page1 the formatting of every other page goes awry, so I’ve left it in. After I convert, the last half of the pages are 100% correct while the first half has pages with elements that run off the edge. I get 3 errors similar to "item 2 from page 2 crosses the gutter boundary". Does anyone have any idea what may be happening to me or of some settings I should check?

Thanks,
David Rock

Hi,

when building a booklet pagemaker cannot do this if there are images or text blocks that go over page size.
You must crop thos images so that they don't surpass the edges of the original paper size.
This will do the trick
Afterwards you uncrop your images so that they surpass again the paper size.

hope this helps

Grillhouse,

Great Tip there. I always knew that any elements that overlap the gutters will cause build booklet errors, but I never heard of your trick until now. thanks! When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Grillhouse - can I ask you to clarify something here? I understand what you are saying about how to handle graphics that extend beyond the page dimensions, but with regards to text....

If you have text set to autoflow from one page to the next, but define the text block within the page size, does this affect the build bookilet function? I guess what i am asking is, does the text on each page have to be in its own text block (without continuing on to next page?). I am doing my first project that will involve using the build booklet plug-in for printing in-house. The page size is A5 (about half US letter page size), to be printed on A4 paper (about full US letter page size). It wil have 32 pages and much of the text is one continuous block running over over several pages. Will I have to divide up the text into page size blocks before attempting to use the BB function?

Eggles... text autoflow will have no effect on 'build booklet'. What is in question are images that run from one page to the other, going into 'the gutter'. Build booklet chokes on these objects. Also if you have a text block that goes from one page to the other, running across the gutter, this will cause you grief. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

OK, with you there. Thanks for clarifying. Having never used the BB function, not too sure of the quirks. But will definitely remember to keep all graphics and text blocks within the margins.

I usually recommend that people not use the BB function, but rather allow their service bureau use their prodfessional imposition software. They paid upwards of $20,000 for the stuff, may as well let them use it! :~p

BB works if you are printing to an office copier/printer, but today many of them will do the build booklet with their own drivers and give you less grief. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

This particular project will be printed in-house (on a Xerox Phaser 7700) so in fact I will need to use PMs BB function.

Hi, everybody,

been away some time, but I have one remark for Eggles about text. If you have a text bloc that spans over two pages (like a headline) the same thing will happen to this text bloc.

You ony can prevent pagemaker from giving you the same error as wit images, if you make two text blocs and overlap them. Then use the text handles and see that they are inside the page margins

hope this helps

Thanks grillhouse - another tip to tuck away for future reference. (I'm still trying to get hold of suitable graphics for this booklet I am doing - the company's safety handbook).
