Electrical Storm & T1 Down - Every Time...

Ok, I have a Voice PRI in Kingsport TN. It's running over Sprint and I've purchased through a reseller. Every time they have an electrical storm and there is lightning, the T1 takes a hit and cuts all calls. This happens several times each month. Is there anything I can do or request to prevent or improve this?
 
I WOULD CHECK TO SEE IF THE TELCO SMART JACK IS ON A UPS, IT'S NOT THERE RESPONSIBLITY. SEE IF THERE IS AN AC CORD FROM THERE EQUIPMENT PLUGGED INTO AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET, IF SO UNPLUG IT AND SEE IF THE T1 GOES DOWN. NEXT MAKE SURE YOUR EQUIPMENT HAS A UPS ON IT.

Toni269...you need to ask sprint which now is embarq to put
a oneac T1 package protection on your T1 it will save the T1 package and your equipment and ask them to protect
the cable side as well with oneac 5 pin modules.hope this helps the csu can be on a ups but if it hits before the ups
which is the line side of the T1 it bounce the T1 before your equipment ups will not help.hope this helps

look into fiber isolation for that.. if sprint doesn;t seem to respond, contact the public utilities commision for your state... sprint does good work in that area, but they may need a nudge.. after any repeated trouble you need to move the problem up one level..

If it is on a HDSL or HDSL2 smartjack hook up to the diagnostic port and see if you can determine if the problem is at the CO end, on the HDSL link, or at the Premises.

I would also get a clamp on ground tester and check the ground resistiance form the protector. Also check it at the smartjack card cage.

If (and only if) the grounds are good then consider "surge" protection too - check with Polyphaser.

And John is right, this really isn't your responsibility so pushing it up a notch with the Telco is a good idea too.

I am suprised that there is no protection on the circuit,
there is hardware made for that purpose. Contact your provider,have them conference Sprint in on the disscussion
about the problems you are having. Where along the circuit does it go down? Depending on their response, ... the lighting effects their office, or it effect your site
locally, another vendor may be able to provide better service in your area.

The Sweetness of low price is forgotten long before the bitterness of poor quality.

I had a call with the provider yesterday and went over every single suggestion. They said it's some last mile single pair copper wire. When the lightning strikes, it creates such a disturbance it drops calls. He said that none of those solutions would help, it's a small site so we can't pay for the fiber. The data was moved to a different provider, cable I think that seems to survive the storms better. It's not a call center so we will just live with it. Not sure what's going on (global warming maybe?) but the electrical storms are several times per week.

Do you have a T-berd or similar tester.

Maybe leave that one the line for a a month and see what availability is. Then see if you are getting what it says in your service level agreement (SLA).

Also, rememebr that until you have at least threatended to call the utilities commisions odds are you have not gotten their "attention".

Usually I won't file without give them a fair chance. My Schtick is to ask them for the number for the PUC. If you are talkign to a low lever person they won't even know what you are talking about. Just tell them they are required by law to give this to you and to ask their supervisor for the number. Viola you have bumped things up a level.

Then just explaint he situation and how furstrated you are and ask if they can work on the problem in which case you won't need the number.

Unless they have actually come out and measured the ground resitance and made other measurements there is no way they can say it can't be fixed.
