I have 8 switches...which switch should i make the root bridge?

the one closest to the the gateway router?

If you have 8 switches, then you should have 7 switches that plug directly into 1 switch. Thus that one is your core switch.

Unfortunately thats not the case in my situation...I have six switches in one general area that are upliked off of one an other and 2 that are connected via a fiber uplink...

If you have 6 switches in the same area ... then you should elect one of them the main switch and plug the 5 other switches into that one. There should be no daisy chaining.
