We have an HP 4200/4300 that has two EIO slots. The JetDirect card that we had installed stopped working (or at least we thought it was the card), but when we took it out and inserted a different, working card, it still didn't respond. Then, after reinserting the original card, it lit up as a 100Mbps connection, even though it was plugged into a 10Mbps hub. Is this more likely a problem with the EIO slots? When we print out the config page, it lists both EIO slots as empty. And, if it is the EIO slot, is that repairable (sp?) ? Thanks in advance!

Just to be sure, you changed the cards while the printer was off?

When you got the 100Mbps lights, did you turn it off/on and get the same indication?

Have you tried it on both EIO slots?

Was the jetdirect card you installed the same(model# & firmware) ?
As a last gasp factory default the printer. If you swapped the cards with the printer powered up,you may have blown the card(s) or the formatter bd.

Great! One of the people in word processing said that they took out the card and reinserted it, terrific. So I guess I start looking for a new printer (for the network at least; this one might still work as a local printer?)....Very good to know, is there a way to find out if the formatter board can be replaced or confirm that it is blown? Thanks....

Any Warranty on the printer ?
Do you still have the box it came in ?

If the printer self tests ok when you power it up,the formatter bd is ok. Try to ping the printer IP address. That will tell you if the E-net interface is working. If ping is successful, try to Telnet to the printer IP address.

Same here -
I have an HP LaserJet 4200TN with a JetDirect 615n card that lost its connection to the network and isn't showing any lights. I removed the card and reinstalled it and turned the power back on and it still doesn't have either light (10/100) on. I also installed it in the other EIO port with no luck. The printer and card are only two years old. I printed a configuration page and it shows EIO 1 and EIO 2 as empty.

My local printer supply contact said that this is a common problem with this card. He said that HP is no longer selling the 615n and has replaced it with the 620n. The 615n can still be found on the internet, but I would not buy it if this model is known to fail after only two years.

It looks like HP will be getting another $350 out of me.
