I am a Photoshop newbie trying out version CS6 of Adobe PhotoShop. I have been handed a single-layer PSD file with a phone number, and a GIF file with the same information. One of the numerals in this number is incorrect. I do not know what font was used originally, so I cannot simply type and paste the corrected number. Is there a way to copy the section of the graphic with the phone number into a new layer, make it accessible to the tyoping tool, and then make the change?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If your image does not contain a live type layer, you will need to paint out the old numbers (via clone tool or content aware fill, etc) and create a new type layer.
