Realise that this is a trivial request but does anyone know if it is possible to edit the description of services in 2003?

I am able to do this on our Windows 2000 Server services but not on 2003(field is greyed out), would be handy to let other oncall staff know which application services are important.

You can actually edit the description from the registry. You'll want to look at:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\XXX

Once you decide which services you would like to change, edit the REG_SZ that states Description. If there is not an entry for Description, create a new string value with "description" as the name, and then whatever you choose as the value.....
