I am not very familar with acrobat so some of these questions are probably fairly basic. I have Adobe Acrobat 6 standard and want to know if I can edit .pdf files like I would in word.

No, not like you would in Word. but there is a third party program out there called PitStop Professional by that you can make some changes to a pdf document. It is mainly for prepress operations to get a pdf ready for printing, it is kind of expensive also but in my work is envaluable.

You can use the touch-up text tool to edit text in a PDF.

However, it is only supposed to be used for small changes. Formatting, word-wrap etc is not automatic.

If you have Acrobat 6, you can save the document as RTF.
There is also a rather cheap but good text export tool called SolidPDF
However, PDF is more an end format. Editing should, if possible, always be performed in the source format and re-postscripted afterwards.

Andy
