Editing patterns in AI 8.0

Sometimes when I'm working in Illustrator (yes, my office is STILL working in 8.0), I make a pattern and, when I try to edit it...I can't. I try to drag it from my palette to the artboard and it just won't go the artboard. And sometimes it's a situation where I'm using a pattern that I've created elsewhere, but I just want to recolor it, so I don't have the objects I originally used to create the pattern anymore.

Sometimes I realize I'm on the wrong layer or using the wrong tool, so that's the first thing I check. Then I try quitting Illustrator and throwing out the preferences. That does the trick most of the time. If that doesn't work I reset my PRAM and that does the trick. But right now, I've tried all of that and I STILL can't edit my pattern.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Does anyone know how to solve it? I'm about to pull my hair out! ARGH!

Thanks
Grace

LOL, throwing out your preferences wont do anything but reset your preferences. Artwork like patterns are saved with the file so it will just come right back next time you open the file. If your pattern is vector based you should be able to drag it onto the stage and edit it freely. If reseting and deleting files does the trick then your machine is likely in need of an upgrade.
