I've tried to import divx files into Adobe Premiere, but for some reason there is no sound. Are there any plugins or patches which will allow Premiere to edit Divx files?

There won't be any sound if you only import an avi file. (There's sound, but Premiere doesn't understand it--how and why it works that way, I don't know.) You have to import the sound file separately. VirtualDub is a neat, free, app to strip sound of any mpegs.
