editing data warning

I would like to trap editing a record with previously entered data and ask if they want to edit the data, but allow data entry of a null field without this step. This is an attempt to prevent erronious data entry by borded keypunch operators whom are entering data without looking at the screen to see which field they have tabbed to. If anyone has implemented something like this, I would be thankful for their input.
