Hi. I'm completely new to Illustrator, so please forgive the possibly stupid question. The first few images I've edited in Illustrator, I was able to use the Selection tool and the Magic Wand to select specific objects (letters, lines, blocks, etc.) within the image, and I could "figure it out" reasonably well from there.

In a particular image I'm working with now, though, both of these tools are refusing to select anything more specific than the outline of the entire image. The image is a series of black boxes on a transparent background; each box contains black text. There is only one layer, and the image isn't locked. I don't understand why I'm not able to select specific text and/or lines as I was with the previous images. Any advice? Thanks!

Take a look at the View menu - about 2/3 down - and see if it has "Show Bounding Box". If so, click that. You might have accidentally clicked "Hide Bounding Box".
