I've got a site with a Shared Documents library. There are Word doc's in the library. The Members group for the site is a AD global group with a couple of dozen members. When most of those members click on the name of a shared doc they get a dialog asking them if the want to edit it or open it read only. If they choose Edit then they're editing the version saved on the site and when the save their changes they're in that doc. At least one and possibly more of the members of that group don't get the dialog. They're just offered the opportunity to save the document to their own local drives and can't save their changes to the version on the site.

What's going on? I'm a neophyte at SharePoint admin, so it's probably something simple, but it's got me stumped.

Are the Office versions consistent on the machines?

The 1st group of people sound like they have Office 2007 as this is how it behaves. The 2nd group of people sound like they are Office 2003 or lower

If the versions are consistent - Make sure the ones that only get the open / save dialog box have the SharePoint components installed. Also check and see if they can click the drop-down on the file and choose "Edit in Microsoft Word" successfully.
