can somebody please tell me why when i go to "edit original" my photoshop opens or appears, but the file itself doesn't open? is there a way i can specify what program to open depending on the file type? (such as having JPegs open in photoshop instead of defaulting to Preview)

See my answer to your Pjotoshop question about opening PS files automatically.
If you're on OSX, clcik on any image file - while in finder - that you want to default open in Photoshop (like Image.jpg or Image.psd). Go to File menu/Get info (or hit Command I). Select Photoshop to Open With. Then click on the Change All button to make all images of that type open in Photoshop, or whatever app you want.
