Hi Guys,

I have a free text field in my database. I know I can set it to either RTF or HTML - but it displays so large and messy in my report...

I want to be able to control this text with a formula.

Any possibilites.

PS: I would like to set it to Tahoma 7.

Can you explain more about what you mean by controlling the text with a formula?? Do you mean you want to change the text according to the length of the field or just set it to Tahoma 7 on certain records??

Just change the text.....

sorry for not describing my question properly.

If I could re-format the font using a html script that would be great.

I just want to alter the font. That is it.

In that case you should just be able to rightclick on the field and select format field. Then click onto the font tab and select your font and size of font from the drop down list.

Is that what your after?

No. You can't edit Freetext in the normal way.

It is not saved as a normal string. You can interpret the text using RTF or HTML - but the text appears too large and messy.

It's okay - I think it is impossible.

I might just create a Plant_text in the database and convert it that way.

Thanks anyway Steve

Right-click, Format Field and Font tab. (At least that's how it is for Crystal 10.)

Select the formula icon (x+2 and a pencil). You'll find [Font Names] under Functions, and can choose. That's true of most printing features, though font size is just a number.

That's assuming you want a choice. If you want a particular field to be different, you ought to be able to do that from the menu bar after selecting.

Dear APB,

Is the issue that withing the free text there is font style and sizing information? And the result you want it to change the font styles/sizes that are in use?

If you are at CR 9 or higher then you can use memo fields in a formula; therefore I suggest you explore the replace function.

Since you didn't provide an example of what is contained in the text, I cannot provide an example formula.

Hth,

Hello.

When I was using the term Freetext, I was meaning memo field - because that is the way Crystal Reports 8.5 treats a FREETEXT (varchar 2000) field.

I don't think is anyway to re-format this type field in crystal reports 8.5....I have tried every where..

Thanks anyway guys.

PS: I am going over to Crystal XI as we speak - so the problem will be short lived.

Dear APB1981,

It is always helpful when asking a question to give your CR version, the database and driver being used, and to use Crystal's terminology (ex: memofield rather then free text field).

Of course, you could always use a SQL Expression but at your version you would be limited to 254 characters returned.

The other option is to have the dba create a calculated field in your db that strips the offending characters from the field for use in reporting.

regards,

ro
