EDI and ERP: is it mandatory to have them both?

Hi,

For B2B transactions, is it really too important to have an ERP system that communicate with EDI documnts? Could I just use a we-based EDI portal that has the full packading of sending and receiving EDI documents instead of investing in an ERP system? Most of the companies I know have an ERP that integrates the EDI data transmitted; but I am wondering if an EDI service is enough to handle a med-size or small business EDI transactions, and avoid expensive ERP and integrations costs.

Of course, you do NOT need an ERP to do EDI.

A small business using spreadsheets can then communicate with trading partners using EDI.
