Is it true that there is no way on earth of extracting mailboxes/attachments from the priv.edb file if it has become inconsistent and cannot be repaired with eseutil/isinteg? It's just seems incredible to me that there are no utilities that can do this. It's all very well to sit back and say just roll back to your last backup, but if you don't have one, you're stuffed completely.

There is a program called Exmerge that you can download. It will extract a users mailbox from the information store and make a .pst with it.

Yes, but only if the Information Store can be started.

So how did the Exchange server crash? I will need to know more details before I can help you

Well, to cut a long story short - received an update from Vet Antivirus. It was not specified that SP6a was required and as a result this particular server Blue Screened and was unrecoverable.Restored from tape the OS partition (Exchange files on another partition).Rebooted, had a couple of problems starting the IS, but fixed with isinteg.
Recently installed SP6a, rebooted IS wouldn't start - database inconsistent.Ran all isinteg checks - no luck.Ended up backing up priv.edb & pub.edb then ran eseutil /p /d followed by isinteg -patch -fix alltests a few times until there were no more warnings/errors. IS is now stable, but all attachments have disappeared and my CEO wants to string me up.....
Tried creating another EXCH server(on another machine) but IS will not start with original EDB's. Error 1276, not the same server....

If you are having the error 1276 this means that the organisation and the site names aare different from the restore Microsoft article (Q231439) will explain what to do. what might have happened to the attachements is that the antivirus whipped them out thinking that they where viruses. I have seen it happen before.
