Echo on T-1 to Avaya G3

I have a Nortel 81c at this end (Chicago, IL) connected via T-1 (non PRI) to an Avaya G3 in Arizona. Calls direct from Chicago to Arizona OR Arizona to Chicago sound fine, AND, if a call comes in to Nortel PBX (via DID on local PRI), then get xferred to Arizona via T-1 TIE Line - call still sounds OK in Arizona (no echo). BUT, if Arizona Avaya user then xfers that call back to Chicago Nortel, we are getting major echo problems at this end.

Currently Nortel trunks are set as (only printing pertinant prompts):

TYPE: TIE
TRK: DTI
PDCA: 1 (NO MODIFICATIONS TO PAD LEVELS)
PCML: MU
SIGL: EAM
STRI/STRO: WNK WNK
SUPN: YES
CLS: CTD DTN CND WTA LPR APN THFD HKD P10 VNL

Not real familiar with adjusting PAD levels (PDCA) in LD 73, so any help is appreciated.

Also, someone mentioned changing CLS for trk from VNL to NTC or TRC - any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

The problem may be that you are unable to implement antitromboning since you do not have two Nortel switches, in effect doubling the transmission distance and adding an unsupportable delay.

I may need to do the same soon so anyone else with an idea please chip in.

NARSBARS

Exactly true NARSBARS - anti-trombuning is NOT an option here. I'm going to play around with PDCA and PADS in LD 73 to see what happen. I'll let you know -

HOWEVER - I would still like to hear solutions from others if they have any!

if your not attempting to trmb the call, your echo is doubled via a round trip. you may be able to pad it out without dropping the overall volume below usable levels. i would have the levels tested at the provider level. do you just have the one pri, if not, is it across the board? if you are using or can use qsig that will allow trmb to work and get rid of the echo as well as giving you more trunk usage

Well, the whole reason this is happening is because the customer in Chicago is in the process of phasing out this office. Symposium call center USED to process calls in Chicago, but call center has been relocated to Arizona (not the Symposium, just the call center - using Avaya IP Agent now). Additionally, there are still a few IP agents here in Chicago that still take calls, but now its via the Avaya - then IP Agent sends call to agent via TIE line. Anyway, some trunks, still come into Chicago PBX (Nortel) and are directed over the T-1 TIES to Arizona call center, then....if the agent getting the call is in Chicago, the call gets xferred back over the TIE line to Chicago - TALK ABOUT RUBE GOLDBERG!!!

It seems that most calls that have the echo issue are calls via Grd start trunks in Chicago. I was able to assign a new PDCA (LD 73) for all the TIE line trunks and modified the ACO and XUT xmit padding so they are padded by about 3 db more than default value (9 db total). I also padded down the DSET value (for digital sets over the TIE line to help drop it a little too). This seems to be tolerable, without threatening volume. We'll see what the next day or two holds.

Thanks for the help - I'l give you what our final outcome is.

makes for a great switch when they replace a symposium with a comic book key system, 90 per cent of companies that make such great tech moves end up in chapter 11. i've watch a dozen or more decent size companies spend so much on systems that don't work because the sales person was sharp, and management made the choices then turned it over to techs to "goldburg" together. symposium is to complex for 90 percent of the acd supervisor that i have met, the training is usually done by people that only know how to read the book. the best solution is a single vendor system, i don't care for avaya, but if you don't want to pay a switchman, using plug and play phones, that may not be the worst choice. of course your competion will be twice as effective. with symposium and nortel, call pilot, you can get routing to the right person in far less time. a good tech with the right switch can create a call flow that allows 30 to 40 percent less demand for agents. 60 k for average acd seat, and management is saving money by not training techs, of course that just my opinion.

AMEN john!!

I have always enjoyed making the Meridians jump through hoops and "tweaking" to my heart's desire, but in this case, it seems like such a waste, especially since we are losing a good customer. Oh well, I'm sure the execs on the top floor feel this is the best decision. The ironic part of it all is that the Company in Chicago actually bought out the company in Arizona, but they are closing the Chicago office... The original plan was to move the Nortel to Arizona - would have been cheaper and works better. But the thought was that the guy who maintains the Avaya is staying on and he would have to learn Nortel. PLUS, the users are familiar with Avaya. So all they did was spent the money to upgrade to IP agent on the Avaya.

Now they've got a Nortel 81C (25.40B+) with mermail 13, and SCCS 4.0 PLUS about 250 3904's just sitting idle. So far, the best bid they have gotten is just over $50K. What a shame considering they probably spent close to $500K just a few years ago.

So, if you know of anyone in the market, this PBX will be in a couple months. I have to have it down and taken apart by Aug 31. They are still serving about 40 people on it, along with a full blown Symposium that has a total of 1 skillset with 3 users!!

So let me know if you are interested, I'll be happy to send you the specs.

jp and his soapbox, i never met a avaya (tech) that could learn a switch at all, let alone a real one.. wish the hospital i work at could jump on that switch

My understanding is that u can sell the hardware but the software will have to be repurchased? Anyone know what it would cost for the software once purchasing the hardware?

Mike

You don't repurchase the software, you need to get a RTU (Right to Use) the softwareThere may be a small fee involved.
