Echo on calls (R11.0 / J179's / Analog Trunks)

Hello all,

I have a client that is running R11.0, with J179s and Analog Trunks.

They are stating on some calls (both internal and external) that some Echo is accruing.

They also stated that when experiencing the echo on internal calls, they can also hear the actual person as well as the office is small (they are a special client) - So this may just be the delay from hearing the voice in the office as well as on the phone.

I have switched them over on a Demo SIP Trunk for outbound calls for two reasons. One, to see if they still experience the echo on outbound calls, and two to possibly sell them the SIP Trunk.

Either way, anything else I can try if the issue still persists?

Avaya has a document called "Audio Quality Tuning for IP Telephones" that they released back in 2007 because it was quite common to get quality issues on IP phones with analog trunks. The problem is this issue existed when true copper lines existed... now that it comes in as SIP, converts to Analog, then you are converting it back for the IP phone you are pretty much guaranteed to get quality issues. You can try the suggestions in that document if you can find it but honestly I doubt it resolves without switching to SIP/PRI.

The only part that is odd is it is happening on internal calls but like you said its not 100% sure on that part. If it is happening on internal calls it might be the card providing VCM resources but that is just a guess.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.
 
What codecs are you using? Are you using WideBand? If it was me, in addition to the QoS Audio Guide that was mentioned, I would look at the CODECs that are available and possibly remove some of them higher-end ones. We do that automatically on all installs. We don't even allow our customers to use Wideband (it's not good in our opinion). That could possibly explain the issues with external and internal callers.

The SIP trunking was a good move. I think that makes complete sense. The only thing I don't understand in the last comment is why they say SIP trunks comes in and is converted to analog and then back to IP. That doesn't make sense to me. It should remain IP - end to end with no conversation unless its required (i.e. an analog port).

99% of "analog" trunks that you get nowadays in the US come in as SIP and then get converted to analog. OP says he has analog trunks so my assumption is it is not true copper but what I call fake analog. This is how it is in the US at least.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.
