Echo between IP handsets

We sometimes have echo between IP handsets not via a GW, what can be a main reasons for this. The echo is similar to Side/ comfort tone in TDM in the speakers ear but more obvious but not in the called person ear. What do you need to look for?

Sources of echo can be very, very hard to pin down...if you have delay/not enough bandwith on your LAN, that can cause echo, but (at least from my experience) it usually causes choppy voice (our techs love to broadcast images to PC's, wreaks havoc on our voice traffic).
