Hi all,
I have several clients in which I need to remotely access their machine. I need to get their WAN Ip from the router (linksys wrt54g in the majority of cases). Instead of telling them to go through the hassle of getting to the router-status page in ie, is there a windows script or command-line that will get that from the client machine? I know I can set an internet favorite for the linksys page, but I'd really rather just have them type a cmd-line thing in (like ipconfig--but which will show the WAN IP) or something similar.
Thanks,
--Jim

I have the same issue.
I just have the client (or family member) go to and read me the ip address shown.

I am investigating other (easier) ways to support them.
If you're using VNC, there are ways to set it up so they initiate the link.
Using MS RDP, the same thing can be accomplished.

I also have a dynDNS account, so that is another option.

dynDNS or an equivalent dynamic DNS service is definitely the way to go. All of these SOHO routers support dynamic DNS and then they don't have to remember to "check" before they leave the office, or bother someone else to check for them.

Yeah, I think I will implement dynamic DNS.
It just seems the easiest all around.

dearingkr,
Thanks, and another star--that site is ideal.

I used to use Dyndns, but I never found a free site, the one I had required some form of payment after a few months, and it's too much to put on these particular clients. But to have them hit that ipaddress.com site prior to them emailing me with a support request is the cat's meow,

I've used DynDNS for more than a year without fee. But I only had one address registered. Perhaps they charge for more than one?

More correctly, that should say 5 hostnames for free.

I have an account there for my personal domain name, so it's unlimited.
