Easy to use SSL package?

Hi, I've done a lot of generic C++ programming and I think I'm ready to start expanding into new areas.
I've got a product idea that I'm working on, but I think it would need to use an SSL connection to exchange sensitive data. I've heard of OpenSSL, but haven't used it or any other SSL API. I'd like to find one that's easy for an SSL beginner like me to start with, multi-platform (and preferably free).
Any suggestions?
