I have recently taken over some of our Network Admin duties and I am trying to learn everything as quickly as I can. This site has been a great resource.
My question is in regards to switches that automatically detect MDI/MDI-X. I recently purchased a 24 port 10/100 3com Baseline switch to use as a backup in emergency situations.
For example, if one of the switches in a stack has some type of hardware failure; I wanted to uplink this 3com switch to one of the still funcional switches in the stack, temporarily providing ports for those users on the switch that went down.
This 3com baseline switch has no specific uplink port or stacking capability, but the documentation reads that all the ports auto sense MDI/MDI-X connectivity.
So I can run cat5e cable from any of the ports on the 3com to an open port on a functional switch in the stack and that will create the uplink? Without using any type of crossover cable or anything?
Or is there a better way to handle situations like the hardware failure I described above? Thanks for your time.
