easy question...printing

I am new to printing in linux (RH 9.0 without a gui!). I have a minolta 2200 connected to the network and would like to set it up linux print server.

Can anyone tell me where to get started with just installing the priner so as to print. where do i get the drivers and what software do i need to print? If rehat comes with the software, i would prefer to use that.

Once i can install and print i can figure out how to make it a print server using samba...

You can use CUPS (

package included from RH 9.
Is the minolta 2200 parallel printer/network (ethernet) printer? Yes, you can configure samba and share out the printer connected to your linux server.

I have installed cups, now what? I have tried looking for good documentation on how to install a printer and print a test page. Unless I am looking in the wrong place, cups has horrible documentation for novice users.

All I want to do is install a printer and test it!

any help would be appreciated.

Hi, You usally access cups though a web browser, since you are not running a gui I would recommend using another machine and not attempting to connect with lynx it runs on port 631 by default. So from a browser

http://x.x.x.x:631

where x.x.x.x is the IP of the linux box. The interface is pretty intuitive once you are connected. I would also recommend trying printconf-tui from a command line on Redhat, it's interface is also very intuitive, with some trial and error you should be able to get it. If all else fails man lpadmin and do it yourself.
