I have an old Dell PowerEdge 4400 acting as a batch and print server, I want to back it up an restore it to a Dell GX240 workstation, that I will use as a server.

I've tryed Ghost and seem to have a good copy but when I try to restore to the GX240, I get an a non-bootable machine.

It must be that the 4400 has all those SCSI drives, and multiple paths, hence the GX-240 is likly not finding files
where they should be. All those SCSI drives is the point of this excercise, I need to strip them from the 4400 to
add disk to other old servers as they are getting low on disk.

I want to try to copy the current config as I don't have the drivers for many of the devices connected to this server.

with ghost I believe that you have to have exactly the same hardware or it will fail.

If the hard drive configuration is different, you will have to edit the boot.ini on the GX240 to tell the operating system where to find itself. If it's going to be on the first IDE controller, the master drive, and on the first partition...

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

Once the Ghost image is installed you could boot from the Windows CD and select upgrade (don't select fix). This should preserve the previous installation and will install any new drivers etc.

I have done this a few times and it has worked well. I had IIS installed but I removed a lot of the default stuff. Doing the 'upgrade' restored these deleted things so I had to remove them again. Apart from that it has been sucessful.
