I am designing a website for a real estate agent, and he wants to put on the page a simple list of his current listings, which he can easily update when it changes. What is the best way to do this? I've never done anything like that before so I dont know where to start.

Give him a password protected user interface that connects to the database/data file you have his properties listed in. I've done a couple real estate sites that use this kind of thing, and what you provide depends on what they want to display and how they want to display it. You'll need to use some kind of server-side scripting, like ASP, Cold Fusion, or PHP, depending on what the web host has available.

Try a product called Macromedia Contribute.
No database required and its WYSIWYG based. Plus it lets you lock out parts of the pages he will be editing to prevent accidents.

Saying that there are many proprietary Real Estate systems out there. It may be beneficial for him to look at using one of those to manage his listings and have you, the web designer, develop a front end template for him.

obviously something in terms of a database is the best way, but another way could be having the agent just put all the listings in a text file (seperated by a 'return' or symbol) and email to you, then you upload the to the server, replacing the existing listings text file...

then just have the website call the listings from the text file, taking the data and splitting up at the 'return' or symbol...
