Earned Value in MS Project 2003

I have never used Earned Value in MS Project 2003 and have always managed tasks, milestones and non effort driven plans.
Can you please provide me your view of how practical and easy it is to implement and use Earned Value in MS Project Plans by various Project Managers with various experience in an IT Programme Environment
