I have been unable to get successful brick level backups of our Exchange 5.5 database using ARcserve Exchange agent. The errors are as follows:
E8604 Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=\Individual Mailboxes\user1, EC=Remote procedure call failed.) \Individual Mailboxes\user1
After I tried a second time, backup didn't run properly, and the error message changed:
E8604 Failed to start backup. (DBNAME=\Individual Mailboxes\user1, EC=Backup Agent Error -- (68) "Error status in named pipe.").
\Individual Mailboxes\user1.

In both instances, the job did not get past the first mailbox and did not terminate correctly. The server had to be rebooted in order to end the job.

Hi,

do you have already found any solution for this problem?
I´m facing exactly the same problem. A few month ago,
the Cheyenne Hotline told me it must be a problem
appending to the Mc Afee Virus Scan. But even shutting down the Group Shield before the Backup Operation didn´t
solve this problem...

Any suggestions ?

I haven't got the solution, but I do have a tip:
Instead of rebooting the server to stop the job, use the kill.exe utility from the resource kit or support tools. Look in the taskmanager for ASrunjob process and from the command-line do: kill -f PID
If necessary stop and start the tape-engine.

Maybe the Remote Procedure Call Service has
something to do with it.
Also the DBASVR.exe is causing an error continuisly.
You´re having the same problems ?

I had contacted arcserve with my problem, and they suggested applying SP3 and the following patch (dated 18-Mar-02).
I got about half the mailboxes backed up, and then the rest came with the following error:
E8602 Failed to read from database. (DBNAME=Individual Mailboxes\user1\Calendar, EC=Backup Agent Error -- (69) "Read/Write error in named pipes.".). It seems to have had trouble backing up calendars for most people, and in some cases the Archive & deleted folders.

This comes from 2 weeks of troubleshooting with CA tech support:

1. Create a brand new ARCserve account and mailbox in NT. Make sure it has all the permissions for NT, for Exchange, for the Backup Agent and for ARCserve Server Admin.

2. Create a new job through the Network window. Make sure that the security settings at all levels are set to the new account.

3. Make sure you have all the SPs and hotfixes installed.

Test a mailbox. If it doesn't work:

3. On the server, stop all services and rename the qsd folder. Start the services and they will create a fresh qsd folder. Make a new job and test.

4. Remove and re-install the Agent.

5. Remove and re-install the Server. Before you uninstall, copy the qsd folder and the database folder to a different location so you can copy them back.

ARCserve seems to get confused *very* easily, so be very careful and thorough in applying the permissions.

I forgot to mention: it is essential that Outlook 97 or earlier is installed on the Exchange 5.5 box, and not Outlook 2000.

The CA docs on this are contradictory, but it is the case that Exchange 5.5 and Outlook 2000 don't play well on the same box.
