E8603 failed to write to database...

Have been trying to set up a disaster recovery scenario and am stuck with sql restore. I am using arcserve 6.61sp2 with Sql agent and MsSql 7.0 and trying to restore to a different hardware platform. When trying to restore i keep getting the message
"E8603 failed to write to database.Database name=whatever EC= backup agent error (27)invalid character in file.
I have found a few E8603 errors on CA website but none refers to an invalid character.
I am rapidly losing what little remaining hair i have so any thoughts would be welcome....
