Arcserve 2k/7.0 workgroup build 1081 sp3
agent for exchange 5.5
NT 4 sp6a
Exchange 5.5, sp4
PowerEdge 6400
PV120T 40/80 DLT autoloader
Exchange stuff resides on external RAID PV660F connected via fibre channel
We are running Groupshield on this server as well.

Im getting two errors when attempting a Brick Level backup of the Exchange db. Not sure if they are related.

From the agent log "dbaxchg2.log" I get this error 30-50 times for some users, some get none:
PID:813 TID:608> WARNING: MAPI system error: OLECALL->Read() return[8004010f]: This attachment is not a File Attachment : Skip it!!!

From the Job log "arcserve.log", I >might< get this error for a user that had the above error:
398 E8602 Failed to read from database. (DBNAME=Individual Mailboxes\USERNAME\FOLDER, EC=EXCH Exchange Agent -- (418) "Application run out of memory".)

Attempting to resolve the issue(s), I ran sp3. After that, the agent didn't work at all, citing "392 W3905 Skip Node or Agent (dbaxchg2) - Not supported in this Edition."
I got the same error after I installed the patch QO06202 for the "out of memory" issue. I finally re-installed the agent from the CD to get back to where I started.

Regarding groups and permissions, the Exchange agent now appears to be set up correctly. The Info Store seems to back up with no errors.

Questions:
1) Are/Could these issues be related? How?
2) Most of the users archive old mail to a local .pst file. Messages should be deleted from the exchange server during this process. Could those 'missing files' be an issue to arcserve?
3) According to Ms Article Q263949, anti-virus APIs give third party vendors low-level access to the info store. There are some registry tweaks in the article that I've played with. Could Groupshield and Arcserve be conflicting there?
4) Am I barking up the entirely wrong tree?

Thanks very much for the help!

Answers:
1) Yes, they could be related. May even be the virus scanner. Are you aware of MAPI/API conflicts with virus scanner?

2) The missing files should not be an issue... buuuuuut they wont be backed up of course.

3) hehehe, see point 1. A good test would be to disable groupshield and then see how you go with the backup.

4) woof woof? Firstly, in order to get to the latest and greatest. You MUST install SP3 on ARCserve2000 AS WELL AS the exchange agent!!! After you have done this, then apply the patch qo06202.caz and then we'lll toubleshoot any errors that come out of it.

I am assuming of course that all of the permissions were set up correctly for the mailbox user, and the mailbox has service account privelage. Also, that there is a MAPI client and that you have initialised this mailbox created.
