I'm using brightstor arcserve backup v9 on a w2k advanced server.
When I try to backup a SQL database that is stored on a NT 4.0 server, I receive an error message E8601 Failed to connect agent (agent=dbasql70, ec=1385).
I already reinstalled the agent on the sql server. I also tried to delete the machine in the backup job, then I recreated it, but no change. In regedit, I change the value of the key UseTCP in hklm\software\computerassociates\bs arcserve backup\dsagent\currentversion\agent\dbasql70 from 0 to 1 and still no change. Can someone help?

Firstly, the obvious, the SQL server service and Backup agent rpc service are both running?

What security are you using? SQL or NT/2000 to run the agent on? Best to use NT/2000 as there are worms that specificly look for the SA account with either no password or a password of SA.

When selecting the SQL server as the source, are you able to expand the databases? If so, your security is good. Bear in mind tho, with the SQL agent, there are two levels of security. Theres the NT/2000 security to connect to the box, then theres the SQL security to connect to the databases. This is often put in the wrong way around.

Hi SjrH and thanks for taking time to answer!

Yes both services are running. I connect to the remote machine using NT/2000 security and for the sql agent, I use sql security. When I select sql server as the source, I'm able to expand the databases.

If I try to modify the sql agent account configuration to use nt authentication instead of sql authentication, I can select nt authentication but I'm unable to enter a username and password. I can only enter a username and password if I choose sql authentication. Any ideas?

Try this:

This article was written especially for E8601 and SQL.

The username and password specified in the agent configuration are not used for backups and restores; they are used during file backups so that the base (or client agent) can connect to SQL and get a list of SQL specific files (*.mdf, *.ndf and *.ldf). The file backup will filter out these files. SQL data will only be backed up during a SQL agent backup.

When you specify SQL authentication in the agent configuration you need to give a username and password. If you specify NT authentication, file backups will use the NT username and password to connect with SQL.

Right on ACiDelic!

I had to enter an SQL account to expand and select the databases, but to start the backup I had to enter an NT account with rights to backup.

Thanks again
