E8601 Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=dbasql@MSSQLSERVER, EC=128)

Hi All,

Has anyone had this error when bakcing up an SQl database:

E8601 Failed to connect agent. (AGENT=dbasql@MSSQLSERVER, EC=128)
I have tried restarting the services and re-installing the SQL agent. It's backing up SQL 2000 DB on a 2000 Server box.

I assume its because the database is in use. Try stopped the service, and then run your backup again.

There are actually a couple of problems here.

1. The job failed to connect with SQL Server when it was trying to backup the data.

2. The job failed to connect with SQL Server when it was trying to build a list of files to EXCLUDE from the file system backup.

These may or may not be related to the same problem. You need to check the following:

1. SQL Server MUST be running during the backup. Otherwise you cannot backup the data.
2. Make sure that the account you are using has all the necessary rights. Check

3. If you are using SQL authentication you must specify a user account and password during installation of the SQL agent. This account is used during file system backups to create a list of files (MDF, NDF and LDF) to exclude. This account may be missing information or incorrect. If you are using Windows authentication then the user account that you are backing up the machine with should have System Operator rights in SQL Server.
4. Also make sure you specified the correct account in the GUI when you packaged the job.
