Server running the backup jobs completes all okay but when it starts on the remote machine it returns E8531 Request denied by the client agent. Anyone any ideas why? Both machines uses the same domain account for backups as they are both in the same domain and same IP subnet. I'm not sure what else I can check. Both machine are running NT Server 4 with ASO 6.61

Cheers.

8531 is usually related to problems with account name and password that you're using to log onto the remote server. When you give the name to log on as, be sure to use the form domainName\userName (even though it's in the same domain). Also the backup user that you're trying to log onto the machine as needs to be a member of the following groups: domain admins (set this as primary), Administrators, and Backup Operators and should have the following rights (you have to click the show advanced user rights box to see all of these): act as part of the operating system, log on as a service, and log on locally.
I hope this helps. [sig][/sig]

Cheers tractorBoy - all the settings are as they should be but the problem hasn't happened in a couple of days - i can only assume it couldnt authenticate or something - anyway, i've still got other problems with arcserve so if you know anything about E8604 or E8511 I'd appreciate any tips. Hmm. 8604 is an error I've gotten backing up Lotus Notes dbs. What kind of an EC are you getting with this error? Are you getting it with all the dbs on the machine or just some? Have you tried stopping and restarting the db agent? I have sometimes had success by doing repeated small test backups of one of the problem dbs and trying different backup users and syntax until I got it to work.

I think I've gotten 8511 too. When you select to use the agent, do you select "Use Computer Name Resolution"? Usually with agent problems, I first try stopping and starting the service and, if that doesn't work, uninstalling and reinstalling the agent. Good luck. [sig][/sig]
