Firstly, so glad I found an active forum for Arcserve which is driving me to distraction.

Here's my environment:

I back up probably 45 servers a night on 5 seperate HP DLT's with 20/40GB tapes. All Arcserve Managers are running ver. 6.61 SP2a Advanced Edition. In addition all Arcserve Managers are NT SP6a boxes.

All client servers have the NT client agent loaded (build 840 - patches LO58331 and LO87349 have been applied to these servers). These agents have been loaded to assist backup of each server's registry. Some servers also run the Open Files agent where required (whereby, as I understand it, you also need the client agent for NT to get a proper backup of these open files.)

I'm currently enjoying backup success with about 95% of my servers except there are three particular servers (each backed up by seperate DLT's on different servers) that always but always report the error given in the subject whenever I stipulate the use of an agent in Arcserve Manager.

I've found one or two interesting CA articles which I have applied that talk about setting the backup and restore to high priority on the target servers. In addition specifying the IP address of these servers and setting registry parameters to increase the wait time between tape changes (except the backups of these 3 particular servers definetly do not require a tape change). CA also mention you can see this error if you have communication problems. This is very unlikely as I've never witnessed problems between these servers in normal operation. Also most of these problem servers share the same physical switch and belong to the same VLAN as their Arcserve manager!

Unbelievably I've been looking at this problem for 3 months now in an effort to get this thing boxed off for good! I've removed all CA software on the client server (registry settings too) and re-installed.

I was certain that once I could find a forum like this someone somewhere would've seen this issue before seeing as I'm seeing it on THREE seperate servers being backed up from THREE seperate Arcserve Managers.

I only hope someone out there can help. Please ask if you need further information.

Very best regards
