I also ran into the E443 error while trying to upgrade an H80 to 5.3 before I updated microcode. Have since gotten it on correct microcode still running 5.1. Now in the led readout it says 0000BBBB
Still lets me login, etc but I cannot find this error message anywhere. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Did you clear NVRAM to get the thing to boot again in 5.1? Or did you upgrade microcode from the SP menu?

I believe it means that the battery not working correctly

A problem was detected with the battery supplying power to the
time-of-day clock. The battery is either weak or is not connected securely.

Note: This is not a critical failure. However, if there is a power failure, the time of day will be lost.

Could also be that NVRAM is still corrupted. Shutdown the machine, disconnect the NVRAM-backup-battery for 2 minutes (should be somewhere on the system planar board - it's a 3V lithium cell), reconnect the battery and start the machine again.

You'll need to choose your console device again AND set the time, because it will come up at 01/01/1970 00:00:00 GMT. So you'll know if the NVRAM was cleared by this procedure.

Yeah also bit by this "AIX 5.3 bug" with our H80.

We are trying the method mentioned in the previous post (remove NVRAM battery, etc).

My concerns are, you would think IBM would have code to check to see if your H80 is the latest and greatest BEFORE it attempts to write the NVRAM.

And most important, WHY doesn't IBM state this issue will occur in the manual. It would have been nice to find out that AIX 5.3 would re-write the NVRAM before it happens.

You should always keep your system firmware and device microcode up to date, especialy before considering upgrading, or even updating, the OS / AIX

For AIX 5.3 on the H80 you need firmware level CM040712 - Added support for AIX 5.3.

Checkout the Firmware and Microcode for the H80 here:

I bet your adapters and disks don't have the latest microcode.

How can you expect to put new software on a system with old firmware / microcode?

Do you honestly think a manufacturer would release a new operating system that has been tested on a sytem with firmware and microcode that is out of date?

Of course not, new software is only ever tested on the latest firmware and microcode and often firmware and microcode is developed in conjunctin with the software to benefit from the new features.

I'll say it again, it would be in upper case but I can only be bothered to cut and paste it....
